The expert panel convened by Taurus Energy has issued a favorable opinion regarding Distillers Grains (animal feed) produced using XyloFerm®.
The Panel concludes, independently and collectively, that the process utilizing the modified strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae XyloFerm strain Taurus13 produces DG grains with nutrient profiles comparable to DG described in the peer-reviewed literature. The Panel further concluded that, in those instances where the DG generated using the modified strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae exhibited higher nutrient concentrations than the control, the differences were either nonconsequential or could be seen as beneficial, in providing an important, nutrient-dense option in livestock diet formulation.
Thus, the Panel concluded that the genetic modifications made to create the XyloFerm strains do not alter the safety assessment or risk profile of DG produced using non-modified, wild type yeast, the safety of which is well-documented in the public literature. As a result, DG produced using the XyloFerm strains developed by Taurus which this Panel has reviewed are GRAS when consumed as animal feed in DG in accordance with 21 C.F.R. § 570.30(b)*, based on scientific procedures.
*21 C.F.R. § 570.30(b): General recognition of safety based upon scientific procedures shall require the same quantity and quality of scientific evidence as is required to obtain approval of a food additive regulation for the ingredient. General recognition of safety through scientific procedures shall ordinarily be based upon published studies which may be corroborated by unpublished studies and other data and information.
